Data License

This license is a legal document designed to protect your rights and the rights of Pareto Software, LLC, the owner of Simplemaps.com. Purchasing or downloading a data product constitutes acceptance of this license.

Description of Product and Parties: This license is a contract between you (hereafter, the Customer) and Pareto Software, LLC (hereafter, the Provider) regarding the use and/or sale of a collection of geographic data (hereafter, the Database).
Ownership of Database: All rights to the Database are owned by the Provider. The Database is a cleaned and curated collection of geographic facts and the Provider retains all rights to the Database afforded by the law. Ownership of any intellectual property generated by the Provider while performing custom modifications to the Database for a Customer (with or without payment) is retained by the Provider.
License: Customers who purchase a license are granted a perpetual license to use the Database. This license does not expire. Free updates to the Database are provided only for the duration associated with the product purchased; after this period ends, the Customer retains full rights to continue using the version of the Database they possess but is no longer entitled to additional updates. Customers may use the Database for projects that benefit their organization or that their organization oversees. The Customer may also use the Database for academic work, including sharing the data privately with academic collaborators, provided the data is not publicly released. Attribution is not required unless otherwise stated. The Customer is allowed to query the Database to power privately or publicly facing applications and may make copies and backups of the data.
Restriction on Publishing Data: The Customer may not publish or otherwise expose any substantial portion of the Database in a publicly accessible form, including HTML, JSON, CSV, or other formats that make bulk data retrievable. The Customer may display limited records from the Database when such display is directly required for the normal operation of their application, provided that the amount of data displayed is narrowly tailored to the application's functionality and does not allow reconstruction of a significant part of the Database.
License Scope by Organization Size: For organizations with fewer than 500 employees, the license covers the entire organization, and anyone within the organization may use the Database. For organizations with 500 or more employees, the license is granted only to the individual purchaser or the specific team that purchases the Database. Anyone who directly collaborates with that individual or team on the licensed project may also use the Database, but the Database may not be used organization-wide. In all cases, the Customer may not publicly redistribute the Database without prior written permission. Customers may transfer their license to a third party, at the sole discretion of the Provider, by submitting a request via email.
Free US Zip Code Database: Offered free of charge conditional on a link back to https://simplemaps.com/data/us-zips from a public webpage where the Customer is using the data. If used internally, the backlink must be placed on the organization's website on a page easily found through links on the root domain. The link must be clearly visible to the human eye and placed before the Customer uses the Database in production.

Free Canada Cities Database: Offered free of charge conditional on a link back to https://simplemaps.com/data/canada-cities under the same terms as above.
Free UK Cities Database: Offered free of charge conditional on a link back to https://simplemaps.com/data/gb-cities under the same terms as above.
Free US Counties Database: Offered free of charge conditional on a link back to https://simplemaps.com/data/us-counties under the same terms as above.
Free US Metro Areas Database: Offered free of charge conditional on a link back to https://simplemaps.com/data/us-metros under the same terms as above.
Free US Census Tracts Database: Offered free of charge conditional on a link back to https://simplemaps.com/data/tracts under the same terms as above.
Free US Congress GIS Database: Offered free of charge conditional on a link back to https://simplemaps.com/data/congress under the same terms as above.
Free Businesses Database (Basic Version): Offered free of charge conditional on a link back to https://simplemaps.com/data/businesses under the same terms as above.
Basic Countries Database: Offered free of charge conditional on a link back to https://simplemaps.com/data/countries under the same terms as above.
Basic World Cities Database: Licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 License.
Canada Data: Contains information from Statistics Canada licensed under the Open Government License – Canada. This does not imply that Statistics Canada endorses our product.
World, Canada, and UK Cities Database Density Data: Includes density estimates from The Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN), Columbia University. 2016. Gridded Population of the World, Version 4 (GPWv4): Population Count. Included under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. The Provider places no additional restrictions on the use or distribution of the density data.
UK Cities Database: Contains data © Crown copyright and database right 2024, licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Sources: Office for National Statistics (ONS) Census 2021 for England & Wales (Built-Up Areas via NOMIS API); National Records of Scotland (NRS) Scotland's Census 2022 for Scotland (Census Localities via UK Data Service/JISC); Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) Census 2021 for Northern Ireland. Geographic boundaries from ONS Geography (Local Authority Districts, Travel to Work Areas) and NRS Geography (Scotland locality boundaries). Certain uses may require attribution to underlying sources; the Customer is solely responsible for compliance. Use does not imply endorsement by ONS, NRS, or NISRA.
Neighborhood GIS Data: As part of our commercial neighborhood maps and US Neighborhoods Comprehensive Database, we offer the source GIS files (Shapefile and GeoJSON). These files have been sourced from public government sources and original research and then cleaned by Pareto Software, LLC. Upon purchase of a neighborhood map, customers are granted the right to use these GIS files as permitted under "The License" (above). Public redistribution is strictly prohibited.
Guarantee: The Provider offers a guarantee of all data products other than our US Neighborhoods Comprehensive Database. For these products, the Provider guarantees that for the period of thirty (30) days from the purchase of a License the Customer shall, upon request, be refunded their actual purchase price within a reasonable period of time. The Customer acknowledges that receipt of a refund constitutes a termination of their License to use the Database. In the event of a refund, the Customer promises to delete the Database immediately. Refunds after the period of thirty (30) days shall be at the sole discretion of the Provider.
LIMITATION OF LIABILITY: THE DATABASE IS SOLD "AS IS" AND "WITH ALL FAULTS". THE PROVIDER MAKES NO WARRANTY THAT IT IS FREE OF DEFECTS OR IS SUITABLE FOR ANY PARTICULAR PURPOSE. IN NO EVENT SHALL THE PROVIDER BE RESPONSIBLE FOR LOSS OR DAMAGES ARISING FROM THE INSTALLATION OR USE OF THE DATABASE, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO ANY INDIRECT, PUNITIVE, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES. THE CUSTOMER IS SOLELY RESPONSIBLE FOR ENSURING THAT THEIR USE OF THE DATABASE IS IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE LAW OF THEIR JURISDICTION.
PROHIBITION OF ILLEGAL USE: USE OF THE DATABASE WHICH IS CONTRARY TO THE LAW IS PROHIBITED, AND IMMEDIATELY TERMINATES THE CUSTOMER'S LICENSE TO USE THE DATABASE.
